PAIR OF CHINESE NORTHERN WEI TERRACOTTA BUDDHIST TILES.
Northern Wei dynasty, Ca. AD 386 - 534. A pair of rectangular terracotta tiles, from left to right: a tile with a standing Buddha set within a recessed niche and backed by a green halo, wearing a long robe falling in linear folds, with tightly arranged hair, a serene face, the right hand raised in abhaya mudra and the left lowered in varada mudra; and a seated Buddha enthroned beneath a tall arch, wearing voluminous robes, with curled hair gathered in a high ushnisha, a rounded face, and the right hand lowered in varada mudra. Size: 330-350mm x 160-170mm; Weight: 9.56kg Provenance: From the private collection of a Somerset gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed before 2000 on the UK /European art markets.
