Description

AMARNA PERIOD PAINTED POTTERY JAR WITH ANKH AND DJED MOTIFS Ca. 1353 - 1335 BC. A pottery jar with a globular body narrowing to a tall cylindrical neck with a thickened everted rim. The neck is encircled by horizontal bands in red, blue and black, with a frieze of pendant triangular motifs around the lower section. The shoulder is decorated with a broad register of alternating personified ankh signs and djed pillars, the former with red hands grasping blue was sceptres, the latter with red arms banded in blue and suspending black ankh signs. Papyrus stalks and lotus blooms on curling stems fill the intervening spaces. The main register is enclosed above and below by narrow horizontal bands in black, blue and red.
