STUNNING GREEK GOLD LEAF PECTORAL WITH SPHINXES AND PALMETTES Ca. 500 - 300 BC. A broad crescentic pectoral formed from thin gold sheet and decorated in repousse. Raised ribs, beaded bands and a row of circular bosses frame the principal register, which depicts winged sphinxes alternating with palmettes conceived as stylised Trees of Life. The sphinxes combine human heads with leonine bodies, curling tails and arched wings with feather lines; their faces, hair and paws are rendered with precise tooling. The warm yellow gold retains a soft lustre that enhances the depth of the relief. The decoration reflects the Orientalising style that spread from Greece throughout the Mediterranean, exerting a significant influence upon contemporary Etruscan and early Roman art.
