Description
RARE HELLENISTIC BRONZE FIGURE OF HANDS PLAYING A LYRE Ca. 200 - 100 BC. A bronze openwork figure depicting a pair of hands playing a lyre. The trapezoidal frame is surmounted by a crossbar with projecting pegs and rounded terminals at either end. Two modelled hands are set against the frame, the fingers extended towards the upper bar in a playing gesture. One wrist is encircled by thick bracelets. The lower section has a broad plate with a stepped base. For a similarly shaped lyre, see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Object Number: 17.230.46. Size: 295mm x 175mm; Weight: 1.82kg Provenance: From a private UK collection; formerly in the S.S. collection, assembled from the 1970s onwards.
