STUNNING GREEK BRONZE HYDRIA WITH SILVER APPLIQUES OF SILENUS BETWEEN DANCING MAENADS Ca. 350 BC. A very rare bronze hydria with an ovoid body on a spreading foot, a broad shoulder, cylindrical neck and wide overhanging rim. Twin upturned handles are mounted on drop-shaped attachment plates cast with bearded satyr masks. The front is decorated with silver appliques of Silenus flanked by two dancing maenads in flowing robes. Silenus, the aged companion and tutor of Dionysus, and the maenads, the godÕs female followers, belong to his thiasos. Their appearance on the hydria therefore alludes directly to the Dionysiac sphere of wine, festivity and ritual drinking. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Object Number: 51.11.8.
