Description
OVERSIZE BAROQUE/NEOCLASSICAL MARBLE MALE BUST Ca. AD 1700 . A marble torso carved in the round, presenting a powerful, idealised physique inspired by the heroic models of Classical antiquity. The torso is animated by a pronounced torsion, with the shoulders drawn back and the weight shifting through the waist and hips. Broad pectoral muscles, sharply defined abdominals and deeply modelled iliac lines create a vigorous play of light and shadow across the polished marble surface. The anatomical treatment combines close observation of the male body with a deliberately heightened sense of physical strength and movement. Its dramatic plasticity recalls the Baroque tradition, while the balanced proportions and classical restraint anticipate the formal language of Neoclassicism. The surviving upper thighs retain the original transition from the taut abdomen to the softer modelling of the hips. Preserved without the head and arms and with losses to the thighs and genital area; surface wear, scratches, deposits and weathering consistent with age. Size: mm x mm; Weight: g Provenance: Private London collection; formerly in a Somerset estate collection; acquired on the UK art market in the 1990s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
