Description

ROMAN MOSAIC PANEL WITH GEOMETRIC MOTIFS, OSTIA STYLE Ca. AD 175 - 200. A rectangular mosaic panel composed of black, cream, and ochre tesserae. The field is arranged with regularly spaced circular geometric medallions. Each medallion contains four inward-curving petals surrounding a chequered central lozenge. Smaller cruciform florets occupy the intervening spaces and create a continuous visual rhythm. The pale ornaments stand in marked contrast to the densely laid black tessellated ground. A narrow linear border encloses the field and gives definition to the balanced composition. The geometric scheme finds close parallels among mosaic pavements excavated at ancient Ostia. Very well preserved, with the tesserae largely intact and the complete decorative pattern clearly legible. For similar see: R.
