STUNNING ROMAN MOSAIC PANEL WITH FISH AND GEOMETRIC BORDER Ca. AD 300 - 400. A rectangular mosaic panel depicting a large fish swimming to the left, skilfully rendered in tesserae of ochre, terracotta red, cream, grey and black. The body is carefully modelled through subtle variations of colour, with the eye, gills, fins and forked tail clearly articulated. Undulating bands of pale tesserae evoke the movement of water around the fish, lending the composition a lively sense of motion. The central marine subject is enclosed by a polychrome geometric border of alternating lozenges, creating a strong decorative contrast with the predominantly white ground. The combination of naturalistic observation, vivid colour and ordered geometric ornament is characteristic of the late antique mosaic tradition of Roman North Africa and Egypt. Preserved as a substantial panel, with scattered losses, displaced tesserae, surface wear and encrustation consistent with age. Set within a modern surround and wooden frame.
