Description
HUGE ROMAN BRONZE OIL LAMP WITH BUST OF JUPITER AND EAGLE Ca. AD 25 - 75 . A bronze oil lamp with a rounded body and a long channelled nozzle with a circular wick hole, the volutes set to either side. The circular discus has a central filling hole within two raised collars. Behind the discus, a crescent with upturned terminals frames a bust of Jupiter with thick curling hair and beard. Before him is an eagle with spread wings, its talons grasping a thunderbolt. The lamp rests on a basal ring with concentric mouldings. For similar see: The Art Institute Chicago, Reference Number 1985.1041a-b. Size: 140mm x 210mm; Weight: 1.9kg Provenance: From a private London collection; purchased in Germany; earlier part of a Dutch collection assembled during the 1980sÐ1990s.
