Description
STUNNING SASANIAN BRONZE JUG WITH STAG-HEAD PROTOME Ca. 800 BC. A bronze jug with a spreading foot and a globular body tapering to a short cylindrical neck, set with a tall strap handle with a thumb rest. The front is formed as a stag protome with a naturalistic head, long muzzle, almond-shaped eyes, rounded ears, and a modelled mane at the head and neck. The antlers spread across the top and frame the tubular spout. A narrow collar encircles the shoulder, and the upper body is decorated with a lightly engraved frieze. The head is restored. Size: 195mm x 130mm; Weight: 650g Provenance: Private UK collection; formerly H.G. collection; acquired from A. Kotllar, Paris, French art market, 1970Ð2006.
