1181 - GANDHARAN STONE HEAD OF BUDDHA Ca.

Estimate £1,200 - £2,000
Description
GANDHARAN STONE HEAD OF BUDDHA Ca. 2nd - 4th century AD. A carved head of Buddha in grey schist, depicting the figure with a serene and contemplative expression. The face is modelled with heavy-lidded, almond-shaped eyes beneath gently arched brows, a straight nose, full lips and a rounded chin. A small urna is indicated at the centre of the forehead. The hair is arranged in characteristic deeply carved locks, swept upwards and gathered over the ushnisha. The elongated earlobes, once associated with the heavy ornaments worn by Siddhartha Gautama during his princely life, emphasise his renunciation of worldly wealth. Size: 240mm x 190mm; Weight: 6.33kg Provenance: From a private UK collection; formerly in the S.S. collection, assembled from the 1970s onwards. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
