Description
GANDHARAN STONE STANDING FIGURE Ca. 2nd - 4th century AD.
A finely carved standing figure of Buddha in grey schist, in a frontal pose upon a decorated pedestal. The figure is shown richly attired, wearing a long, pleated lower garment secured at the waist and a draped mantle falling over one shoulder. The torso is adorned with elaborate necklaces and other jewellery, while the hair is arranged in a high topknot. The Bodhisattva is flanked by two smaller attendant figures. The treatment of the drapery, naturalistic modelling of the body and elaborate ornamentation are characteristic of the Graeco-Buddhist sculptural tradition of ancient Gandhara, which combined Hellenistic and Roman artistic conventions with Buddhist iconography.
Size: 430mm x 245mm; Weight: 8.84kg
Provenance: From a private UK collection; formerly in the S.S. collection, assembled from the 1970s onwards.
