Description
ETRUSCAN BRONZE FIGURINE OR IDOL Ca. 700 BC.
This Archaic-period Etruscan bronze votive statuette represents a standing female figure, cast in the round and conceived in a markedly abstract, hieratic manner. The elongated body broadens into a sharply tapering, almost triangular skirt, beneath which emerge two slender legs and carefully indicated feet. Long, attenuated arms descend in gentle curves beside the torso, terminating in schematically rendered hands. Set upon a narrow neck, the oval head is dominated by large circular eyes, a prominent triangular nose, and a restrained linear treatment of the hair. Small modelled bosses define the breasts and navel, enlivening the otherwise austere surface. The extreme elongation and geometric reduction of the anatomy reflect the stylised language associated with Etruscan votive bronzes of the Archaic period, circa 6th century BC. The surface retains an attractive dark green-brown patina, with minor wear and localised encrustation consistent with age; mounted on a modern stand.
