PAIR OF APULIAN TERRACOTTA LEKANIDES WITH LADIES OF FASHION Ca. 350 - 300 BC.
A pair of terracotta lekanides, each with a shallow lower bowl on a pedestal foot, a domed lid tapering to a tall, stemmed knop with a broad disc finial, and a pair of horizontal loop handles at the sides. Each lid is decorated with two heads of ladies of fashion in profile, set between scrolling foliage and two fan palmettes. Bands of vertical strokes and wave ornament encircle the lower edge of the lids. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Object Number: 2021.40.31a, b.
