Description

INDIAN SANDSTONE CARVING OF BUDDHA Ca. 7th - 10th century AD or later. A carved sandstone depicting Buddha standing frontally within an aureole, his serene face framed by elongated earlobes and hair arranged in a prominent ushnisha. He is richly adorned with necklaces and other ornaments, and wears a short, elaborately draped dhoti secured around the waist. His right hand is raised holding an attribute, while his left arm extends downwards beside the body. The principal figure is flanked by smaller attendants standing in reverential poses. Size: 345mm x 215mm; Weight: 3.92kg Provenance: From a private UK collection; formerly in the S.S. collection, assembled from the 1970s onwards. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
