Description
COLLECTION OF CHINESE TERRACOTTA DANCING LADIES Tang Dynasty, Ca. AD 618 - 907.
A collection of three moulded terracotta figures depicting female dancers captured in animated, rhythmic poses. Each wears a long, flowing robe with a fitted upper garment and dramatically elongated sleeves, the bodies gently curved as one arm is raised above the head and the other extended downwards. Their hair is arranged in elaborate high coiffures characteristic of fashionable female representations of the period. The sweeping contours of the garments, exaggerated sleeves and gracefully inclined bodies convey a lively sense of movement and evoke the music and dance entertainments enjoyed at the cosmopolitan Tang court.
Size: 280-310mm x 125-130mm; Weight: 3.44kg
Provenance: UK private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.
