Description
SOUTH INDIAN BRONZE DRIPPING VESSEL (THARA PATHIRAM) WITH COW-HEAD SPOUT Ca. AD 1700 - 1800. A bronze thara pathiram, a dripping vessel with a bulbous body on a flared foot and a tall arched neck. The spout is modelled as a cowÕs head, with incised eyes, muzzle, ears and short horns. In ritual use, the vessel was hung above a lingam, the phallic representation of Shiva, allowing liquid to drip from the cow-head spout as a continuous offering. Size: 150mm x 65mm; Weight: 190g Provenance: London private collection; France acquisition, early 2000s; ex Swiss collection (1980sÐ1990s).
