ANCIENT EGYPTIAN TEMPLE FOUNDATION DEPOSIT OF TWO DAGGERS, MODEL AXE, AND MODEL SAW.
Thutmose III, early 18th Dynasty.Daggers, models of an axe and a saw come from a foundation deposit of a temple built or enlarged by pharaoh Thutmose III. Model tools represent tools used for the construction of a temple. Inscription on the model axe: „The perfect god, Menkheperre, beloved of Baal“ (Menkheperre is the throne name of pharaoh Thutmose III, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, c.1479-1425 BC). Inscription on the model saw: „he perfect god, Menkheperre, beloved of Montu the master of strength“. Both are mentioning that the king is beloved by warlike deities: first the Egyptian war god Montu, second the West Semitic thunderstorm and lightning god Baal -assimilated to Seth- who had entered the Egyptian pantheon in the early 18th Dynasty. Daggers 26.3 cm and 32.7 cm long. Model knife and model saw are 16.6 cm and 5.5 cm. long.Provenance: with Wladimir Rosenbaum, Switzerland, 1973. F. Lauwers collection, Belgium.
