MATCHED PAIR OF HELLENISTIC GOLD EARRINGS WITH SPHINXES. Ca. 300 - 200 BC. A matched pair of gold earrings, each formed as a twisted hoop terminating in a beaded collar with a tapering conical base, from which rises the forepart of a sphinx with female head, nude torso, and forelegs extended. A loop is attached above the head, and the opposite end of the hoop tapers to a hook fitting through it. For similar see: Christie's Live Auction 2491, Ancient Jewelry, Lot 369.
