SUPERB HELLENISTIC GOLD RING WITH CARNELIAN INTAGLIO OF ARTEMIS.
Ca. 300 - 100 BC. A gold ring with a broad carinated hoop and a tall oval bezel set with a carnelian intaglio engraved with a standing Artemis, her left arm raised and her right lowered to hold a long staff entwined by a serpent. For similar see: The Classical Art Research Centre, Record Number: 40000521. Size: D:17.53mm / US: 7 1/4 / UK: O; Weight: 8g Provenance: London private collection; ex UK ancient art collection; ex H. Cutting collection, Cambridge (1980s–early 2000s). The XRF analyses performed demonstrate that the compositional profile of the metal is consistent with, and technically compatible with, documented metallic compositions of objects from the attributed historical period, thereby providing substantial material support for the object’s authenticity.
