RARE ROMAN ROCK CRYSTAL AND GOLD RING WITH EMPEROR BUST. Ca. AD 1 - 300. A very rare rock crystal ring with a broad, rounded hoop and an oval bezel surmounted at the centre by a gold bust of an emperor, the head gently inclined, with short curling hair framing a fleshy face with full lips, a prominent nose, and wide open eyes. For a similar ring, see: The British Museum, Museum number 1840,0212.22. Size: D:17.93mm / US: 7 3/4 / UK: P; Weight: 10g Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a long-standing private family collection assembled between the 1960s and 2000. The XRF analyses performed demonstrate that the compositional profile of the metal is consistent with, and technically compatible with, documented metallic compositions of objects from the attributed historical period, thereby providing substantial material support for the object’s authenticity. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
