RARE ROMAN REPUBLICAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT IN GOLD RING. Ca. 200 - 27 BC. A carnelian intaglio engraved with the right profile portrait of Alexander the Great in the guise of Herakles, wearing the lion's skin headdress with the jaws drawn over his head and the paws tied at the neck. It is set in a possibly later gold ring with a tapering, rounded hoop. Size: D:19.15mm / US: 9 1/4 / UK: S; Weight: 8g Provenance: From a private London collection; earlier circulating on the Netherlands art market in the 1980s. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
