SUPERB ROMAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO OF A PHILOSOPHER IN GOLD RING. Augustan Period, Ca. 33 BC - AD 14. A carnelian intaglio engraved with the profile head of a philosopher, with the hair brushed forward, a long beard, a pointed nose, and a muscular neck. It is set in a possibly later gold ring with a tapering, rounded hoop. Size: D:16.1mm / US: 5 1/2 / UK: K 1/2; Weight: 7.4g Provenance: Private London collection; previously in an Austrian private collection dating to the 1980s–early 1990s.
