LATE ROMAN GOLD OPENWORK RING WITH AMETHYST INTAGLIO OF A CROSS IN A LAUREL WREATH. Ca. AD 300 - 400. A gold ring with a broad openwork hoop pierced with crosses formed of triangular arms with lozenge centres, with circles in the quadrants, all between beaded borders, and a hexagonal bezel set with a circular amethyst intaglio engraved with a cross with trilobed finials within a laurel wreath. Size: D:20.37mm / US: 10 5/8 / UK: V; Weight: 6.9g Provenance: From a private London collection; earlier held in an old family collection formed over the period 1960s–2000. The XRF analyses performed demonstrate that the compositional profile of the metal is consistent with, and technically compatible with, documented metallic compositions of objects from the attributed historical period, thereby providing substantial material support for the object’s authenticity. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
