BYZANTINE GOLD PENDANT WITH STONE CAMEO OF THE VIRGIN MARY.
Ca. AD 900 - 1100. A rare gold pendant of oval form, with a broad plain rim and a ribbed suspension loop above, set with an oval stone cameo carved with the half-length figure of the Virgin Mary. She is depicted frontally, veiled and haloed, with both hands raised before her chest. The Virgin is flanked by the Greek abbreviation ΜΡ ΘΥ ("Mother of God"). The reverse is plain.
