BYZANTINE GOLD ARMLET WITH CENTRAL TURQUOISE. Ca. AD 1000. An armlet made from sheet gold folded into a hollow tapering hoop with alternating ribs and ropework bands. The front section is decorated with scrollwork and filigree panels leading to a central bezel set with a round turquoise in a raised beaded mount. Four openwork domed elements surround the stone, with further granulation and filigree detail. For similar see: M. Jenkins, M. Keene, Islamic Jewelry in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, n. 16. Size: 62mm x 71mm; Weight: 28.5g Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a long-standing private family collection assembled between the 1960s and 2000.
