BYZANTINE GOLD ARMLET WITH CENTRAL TURQUOISE. Ca. AD 1000. An armlet made from sheet gold folded into a hollow tapering hoop with alternating ribs and ropework bands. The front section is decorated with scrollwork and filigree panels leading to a central bezel set with a turquoise cabochon in a raised mount. Four domed elements surround the stone, with further granulation and twisted wire detail. For similar see: M. Jenkins, M. Keene, Islamic Jewelry in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, n. 16.
