MESOPOTAMIAN AMETHYST CYLINDER SEAL WITH A SMITING HERO AND ATTENDANT FIGURES.
Ca. 1000 - 700 BC.
An amethyst cylinder seal, drilled longitudinally and engraved with a smiting hero fighting a mythical creature, accompanied by a warrior deity and a figure grasping the hero’s arm.
Size: 28mm x 17mm; Weight: 21g
Provenance: Private London collection of an Ancient Art dealer; formerly in a central London family collection, 1990s; reportedly examined by Wilfrid George Lambert in the late 1980s–early 1990s; ex UK art market, 1970s–early 1980s.
