MATCHED PAIR OF HELLENISTIC GOLD EARRINGS WITH WINGED EROS.
Ca. 200 - 100 BC. A matched pair of gold earrings, each with a circular twisted hoop finished with a winged Eros on a stepped plinth. The nude figure stands frontally, with one arm bent and the other lowered, with the wings spread behind the shoulders. The hoop closes at the back of the figure. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Object Number: 22.139.48, .49. Size: 17-20mm x 16-17mm; Weight: 4.6g Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a distinguished New York private collection, assembled between 1975 and 1995. The collection was authenticated in the early 1990s by Dr. Jack Ogden and Barbara Deppert Lippitz, leading specialists in ancient jewellery. A significant number of objects from this collection were also published in a professional catalogue. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
