Description
RARE BYZANTINE GOLD AND LAPIS LAZULI PENDANT WITH CHRIST AND VIRGIN MARY.
Ca. AD 1000 - 1200.
A gold pendant of rectangular form, set with a lapis lazuli plaque carved with the bust of Christ on one side and with the Virgin Mary on the other. The plaque is secured within a serrated mount, with the outer edge decorated with garnet insets and granulation. A suspension perforation passes lengthwise through the pendant.
