Description
EGYPTIAN STEATITE SCARAB WITH A KNEELING FIGURE WITH TWO URAEI IN SILVER SWIVEL RING.
Second Intermediate Period, Ca. 1650 - 1550 BC. A steatite scarab with a domed back lacking both a suture and a distinct separation of the pronotum; instead, small notches mark the point where the pronotum meets the elytra. On the flat base, set inside a single incised line, a kneeling anthropoid figure, holding a sceptre or a flower, is flanked by two confronted uraei. All the figures are marked with cross-hatching, a feature typical of the Second Intermediate Period and of northeastern Egypt and Syria-Palestine. Set in a possibly later silver swivel ring with a plain hoop. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Object Number: 15.3.155; The British Museum, Museum number EA37538. Size: D:21.59mm / US: 12 1/4 / UK: Y; Weight: 4.6g Provenance: From a private UK collection; London art market acquisition; earlier in an Oxford private collection dating to the 1990s.
