EGYPTIAN STEATITE SCARAB WITH CARTOUCHE OF THUTMOSE III IN SILVER SWIVEL RING. New Kingdom, Ca. 1550 - 1069 BC. A steatite scarab with a domed back featuring a triple-lined suture and double lines between the pronotum and elytra. The flat base is engraved with the prenomen of Thutmose III, Men-kheper-ra, in a cartouche, flanked by a possibly cryptographic hieroglyphic composition including the names of the sun god Amun-Ra and Horus. The whole is enclosed within a single incised line. Set in a possibly later silver swivel ring with a plain hoop. Royal names, or epithets referring to the king, were believed to possess strong protective power, much like the names and images of the gods.
