Description
BYZANTINE OPENWORK STONE CROSS. Ca. AD 500. An openwork stone cross with expanding arms, each terminal carved with a concentric circle motif. Petal-shaped openings are cut between the arms, and the centre is formed with four small cells for inlays arranged as a cross. Pierced through the upper arm for suspension. Size: 24mm x 16mm; Weight: 1.8g Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a distinguished New York private collection, assembled between 1975 and 1995. The collection was authenticated in the early 1990s by Dr. Jack Ogden and Barbara Deppert Lippitz, leading specialists in ancient jewellery. A significant number of objects from this collection were also published in a professional catalogue.
