Description
BYZANTINE LARGE GOLD AND GARNET MEDALLION. Ca. AD 700 - 1200 (or later). A gold medallion of domed profile with a beaded outer border and a band of repeating roundels and arches enclosed by twisted wire bands. The centre is set with five garnets arranged as a quincunx, each within a ropework cell, with clusters of granules between. A sixth garnet is set below the suspension loop. The reverse is plain. Size: 45mm x 33mm; Weight: 9g Provenance: From a private UK collection; London art market purchase; earlier with the Parthenon Gallery in the 1990s.
