VIKING GOLD FILIGREE MEDALLION WITH KNOT MOTIF. Ca. AD 800 - 900 (or later). A gold medallion with a central boss enclosed by a beaded ring and seven granules within twisted and plain wire cells, with smaller beads between. This lies within an octagonal field framed by beaded wire, with looped projections extending beyond the edge. The surrounding compartments are decorated with filigree scrolls between applied bosses. A suspension loop is attached above. The reverse is plain. Size: 35mm x 31mm; Weight: 9g Provenance: From a private UK collection; London art market purchase; earlier with the Parthenon Gallery in the 1990s.
