Description
LATE BYZANTINE GOLD CROSS WITH FILIGREE AND GARNET CABOCHONS. Ca. AD 1200 - 1400 (or later). A gold cross pendant composed of hollow spheres arranged around a central round garnet cabochon in a mount with a twisted wire border, with one sphere on each arm and two on the lower arm. Each sphere is encircled by three fine applied wires, with clusters of filigree and wire circles between them. The terminal spheres on the horizontal arms end in a small circular mount set with a garnet cabochon. The lower terminal ends in a cluster of fine granules, and the upper terminal is surmounted by a suspension loop. Size: 44mm x 32mm; Weight: 7g Provenance: Private UK collection; acquired on the London art market; previously in the collection of D. Ruskin, Oxford, 1990s. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
