NEO-ASSYRIAN QUARTZ BARREL-SHAPED CYLINDER SEAL WITH A WINGED MYTHICAL CREATURE AND OSTRICHES.
Ca. 800 - 700 BC.
A quartz barrel-shaped cylinder seal, drilled longitudinally and engraved with a human-headed mythical creature with a winged lion body shooting arrows at ostriches. A six-pointed star and a rhomboid are depicted in the exergue.
Size: 30mm x 13mm; Weight: 9g
Provenance: Private London collection of an Ancient Art dealer; formerly in a central London family collection, 1990s; reportedly examined by Wilfrid George Lambert in the late 1980s–early 1990s; ex UK art market, 1970s–early 1980s.
