Description
NEAR EASTERN MOTTLED BLACK STONE CYLINDER SEAL WITH RITUAL SCENE AND CUNEIFORM INSCRIPTION Ca. II millennium BC. A mottled black stone cylinder seal engraved with two nude, curly-haired heroes, acolytes of Enki-Ea, arranged symmetrically in half-kneeling poses and holding vessels from which streams of water flow. Two water buffaloes drink from the streams, with a cartouche of four columns of cuneiform set between their horns. A river is represented below by a band of wavy lines. Size: 40mm x 26mm; Weight: 64g Provenance: Private UK collection; Ex ex London gentleman, SM, deceased 1969-99. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
