Description
COLLECTION OF EGYPTIAN FAIENCE SCARABS New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, Ca. 1550 - 664 BC. A collection of five glazed-faience scarab and scaraboid amulets in cream, turquoise and pale green. Four are modelled with rounded carapaces, articulated wing cases, heads and folded legs; the fifth is of lentoid form. Their undersides bear differing hieroglyphic, stellar, vegetal and linear devices. One pale green example remains undecorated beneath and displays several ancient perforations. The varied forms and designs suggest their use as personal protective amulets and seals. Minor chips, glaze loss, surface wear, encrustation and deposits consistent with age. Size: 17-21mm x 11-14mm; Weight: 11g Provenance: Private UK collection; acquired in Germany; formerly with G. M., Sweden 1980s-1990s. Studied by PD Dr. habil. Pieter Gert van der Veen, Johannes Gutenberg-UniversitŠt Mainz.
