Description

EGYPTIAN STEATITE SCARAB WITH THUTMOSIS III CARTOUCHE IN SILVER RING New Kingdom, Ca. 1479 - 1425 BC. A steatite scarab set in a possibly later silver ring, with the domed back marked by a single-line suture and pronotum separation, while V-shaped notches appear along the upper outer edges of the elytra. The legs are incised and naturalistic, with striated details on the upper part. The flat base is engraved with the prenomen of Thutmose III (Men-kheper-ra) in a cartouche, between a hieroglyphic composition reporting some titles and epithets of the king: nTr nfr nb tA.wy (Perfect God, Lord of the two Lands) on the right, and pt pt xAs.wt nb(.wt) "who reverses all the foreign countries") on the left. The whole is enclosed by a single incised line. Royal names, or epithets referring to the king, were believed to possess strong protective power, much like the names and images of the gods.
