ROMAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO WITH A LEGIONARY EAGLE AND MERCURY IN GOLD RING Ca. 100 BC - AD 100 Oval carnelian intaglio engraved with an eagle standing upon a podium, its wings partly displayed and a laurel wreath held in its beak. The bird may represent the roman legionary aquila. Beside it stands a diminutive figure, plausibly Mercury. The gem is mounted in a possibly later gold ring with a raised oval bezel, expanding shoulders and a plain hoop. Diameter:13.67mm, US:2 1/2, UK:E, Weight 2.7g. Provenance: Private London collection; Previously with I.G.; acquired from an East Coast, USA collector prior to 1979.
