Description
DAVID SCHLUSS (born 1943)
Wedding
signed ‘Schluss’ (bottom right)
oil on canvas
91 × 121 cm
Painted in the 1970s
David Schluss, born in Israel in 1943, began studying art at a very young age. Influenced by great masters such as Chagall, Miró and Botero, Schluss developed his own style and painting technique. He began experimenting by painting with his hands, without a brush or palette knife. He explains: ‘With the palms of my hands, I can achieve a play of light that I could never achieve with a brush. I start with the abstract, then the figures emerge...’.
A deeply symbolic depiction of a wedding reception rendered in Schloss’s characteristic semi-abstract style, where faceless figures blend into warm shades of ochre and cream beneath an enveloping canopy. The work embodies the themes of unity, spirituality and human intimacy.
