Description
PRÉFÈTE DUFFAUT (1923–2012) Tower of Babel signed and dated ‘Préfète Duffaut 96’ (bottom centre) oil on canvas 75 × 50.5 cm Painted in 1996 Préfète Duffaut was one of the greatest masters of Haitian art and a leading figure at the Port-au-Prince Art Centre. Renowned for his visionary paintings, he developed a highly personal style, characterised by fantastical landscapes, celestial skies, winding staircases and imaginary cities bathed in light. Blending reality and the imagination, his richly detailed compositions have established him as one of the most important figures in modern Haitian painting. His works are held in the collections of major museums, notably the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Figge Art Museum, as well as in several Haitian institutions.
