Maxim Kantor (born 1957) is a German-Russian painter, writer, philosopher and art historian.
He began exhibiting in 1986 and has since held numerous solo exhibitions in international museums and institutions, including the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the Schirn Kunsthalle, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, the Museum Bochum, the British Museum in London, the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus in Osnabrück, the National Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, the Musée national du Luxembourg, the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the National Museum in Gdańsk.
In 1997, he took part in the 47th Venice Biennale with a solo exhibition entitled *Criminal Chronicle*. He works with several international galleries, including Eva Poll (Berlin), Asbaek (Copenhagen), Nierendorf (Berlin), Wittrock Kunsthandel (Düsseldorf–Berlin) and Barry Friedman (New York).
The author of novels, plays and essays translated into several languages, he is also the publisher of artists’ books and major series of prints. His graphic works have been acquired by several European national libraries, and his paintings are held in various institutions and public collections.
He has also created monumental series, stained-glass windows and art projects for cultural and religious institutions across Europe. Maxim Kantor lives and works in Germany, France and the United Kingdom.
