Description
KONSTANTIN FLAVITSKY (1830–1866) Susanna and the Elders oil on canvas 41 × 33 cm PROVENANCE: Koller, Zurich, 19th Century Paintings, 26 March 2010, Lot 3259 Private collection Painted at the height of Konstantin Flavitsky’s brief career, this work is one of the very few paintings by the artist to have appeared on the art market. Formerly held in a private Swiss collection, it was sold at Koller. Konstantin Dmitrievich Flavitsky (1830–1866) was one of the leading figures in mid-19th-century Russian historical and religious painting. A prominent figure in the academic school, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg under Fyodor Bruni, where he was awarded the highest academic honours before being granted a six-year scholarship to study in Italy, from 1856 to 1862. Influenced by Bruni and Karl Brioullov, he combined the ideals of academic Romanticism with a nascent realist sensibility. On his return to Russia in 1862, he was elected an honorary member of the Imperial Academy. In 1864, the success of his famous painting *Princess Tarakanova* led to his appointment as a professor. Although he died prematurely of tuberculosis at the age of thirty-five, Flavitsky nevertheless left a significant legacy and remains one of the greatest exponents of Russian academic painting. His works are now housed alongside those of Karl Bryullov, Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin and other great masters of Russian art in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum in St Petersburg.
