IVAN SHISHKIN (1832–1898) Forest edge authenticated by Valentina Antonovna Lagoda ‘I certify: a work by I. I. Shishkin. V. A. Lagoda-Shishkina’ (along the lower edge) pencil on paper 23 × 30 cm Valentina Antonovna Lagoda-Shishkina, the younger sister of Olga Antonovna Lagoda-Shishkina, Ivan Shishkin’s second wife, joined the artist’s family circle following Olga’s death in 1881 and remained closely connected to the family until the painter’s death in 1898. As the custodian of Shishkin’s estate, she played an important role in the preservation and cataloguing of his work and frequently added handwritten inscriptions of authentication to unsigned drawings and studies from the artist’s studio. This drawing bears such an inscription, attesting to its attribution to Ivan Shishkin.
