Painted in 1906, this work depicts two young girls standing in a light-filled clearing. Characteristic of Stolitsa’s mature style, it combines a subtle treatment of light with a restrained colour palette and a free, pictorial brushstroke. The composition reflects the artist’s enduring interest in atmospheric effects and illustrates the qualities that made him one of the leading representatives of the Kuindzhi school of landscape painting.
Evgeny Ivanovich Stolitsa (1870–1929) was a Russian and Ukrainian landscape painter, and was one of Arkhip Kuindzhi’s most eminent pupils at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he studied between 1894 and 1897. Born in the village of Budai, in Podolia (now in the Odessa region of Ukraine), into a family of forest rangers, he had been deaf since childhood. Having taken part in numerous exhibitions in Saint Petersburg during the first quarter of the 20th century, Stolitsa inherited from Kuindzhi a fascination with the effects of light and colour, combined with a broad and expressive pictorial style.
A keen traveller, Stolitsa undertook painting expeditions across the Russian Empire, notably along the Volga and Dnieper rivers, as far as the Arctic aboard the icebreaker *Yermak*, and throughout Europe. His works were exhibited internationally, notably at the 1900 World’s Fair, where they attracted attention, and he received awards in Liège and Munich. In 1909, he was elected a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. His works are now held in major museum collections, notably at the Tretyakov Gallery and the Odessa Art Museum.
