Vladimir Leonidovich Muravyov (1861–1940) was a Russian painter and graphic artist born into the aristocratic Muravyov family. He studied as an external student at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts under Mikhail Klodt and Julius Klever, whose romantic landscapes profoundly influenced his work. Convinced that the Academy could offer him no further benefit, he left his studies before completing them and quickly achieved critical and commercial success with his atmospheric forest landscapes and hunting scenes. A passionate hunter, his works appealed to the Russian aristocracy, including members of the imperial family.
After the Revolution, he abandoned the aristocratic title ‘Count Muravyov’ in favour of simply ‘Muravyov’, whilst continuing to paint the forest and hunting themes for which he was renowned. During the Civil War, he worked as an artist with a Red Army unit in Rostov-on-Don before joining the Drama Theatre in 1922. His works are held in numerous regional museums in Russia and in private collections around the world.
