Vladimir Baranoff-Rossiné, a leading figure of the Russian avant-garde, was born Shulim Wolf Leib Baranov in Kherson (Ukraine) in 1888. After studying in Odessa and then at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, he moved to Paris in 1910, where he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. From 1912 onwards, he worked at La Ruche alongside Marc Chagall, Ossip Zadkine, Alexander Archipenko and Chaïm Soutine. He also became friends with Hans Arp, Robert Delaunay and Sonia Delaunay.
Influenced by Cubism, Futurism and Orphism, he developed an innovative artistic language, particularly in sculpture, which Guillaume Apollinaire praised for its originality. During the First World War, he spent time in Norway, where he organised his first solo exhibition. On his return to Russia in 1917, he took part in exhibitions of the Soviet avant-garde and developed the optophonic piano, an instrument combining colour and light inspired by Alexander Scriabin’s theories of synesthesia. He gave several optophonic concerts in Moscow.
In 1925, he settled permanently in Paris, where he continued his work as a painter and sculptor and exhibited regularly at the Parisian Salons. Arrested by the Gestapo in 1943, he was deported to Auschwitz, where he died in 1944. His works are now held in major international institutions, notably the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
