NIKOLAI ULIANOV (1875–1949) Portrait of Zakharova signed with the Cyrillic initials ‘Ul’ (bottom right), inscribed in Cyrillic and dated ‘Portret Zakharovoy / 1922’ on the mount, inscribed and dated ‘Ulyanovoy V.E. / .. p-t Zakharovoy / 1922’ on an old exhibition label affixed to the mount red chalk on paper 60 × 43 cm Executed in 1922. EXHIBITION: Exhibition hall of the Union of Soviet Artists of the USSR (according to an exhibition label affixed to the mount). Nikolai Ulyanov (1875–1949) was a Russian painter, graphic artist, theatre set designer and writer. One of Valentin Serov’s leading pupils, he made his name as a portraitist and collaborated with Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vsevolod Meyerhold. His work reflects a variety of influences ranging from Art Nouveau to Cubism, via Art Deco and Neoclassicism. Among his best-known works are the print series *Pushkin in Life*, the painting *A. Pushkin and N. Goncharova before the Mirror at the Imperial Ball* and *K.S. Stanislavsky at Work* (1947, Tretyakov Gallery), for which he was awarded the Stalin Prize.
